sometimes it is hard for me not to equate never getting to see my friends with not having any friends. i mean, not REALLY, but you know what i mean. i had to bail on both krista and candice's birthdays last week after i'd rsvp'ed yes. i was the right thing to do but still. i'd been so looking forward to both of them for weeks and always feel like a superjerk when i have to bail on things. then i did the same thing last night to shaun, sorta. and had to turn tyler down for boardgames (I LOVE BOARDGAMES i so wanted to!!) i mean in every case staying home to work or sleep or take a moment for me was most def the right move but yeah. tofino, man. i cannot WAIT.

my labs are all done! i bid goodbye to chem with happy tears in my eyes but was sad about bio. i loved my lab group and our TA was the shiznit. it was actually pleasantly fun each week!

next semester is organic chem, basic chem continued, more calculus (fuck) verterbrate biology and i think i'll leave it at that.

did anybody hear about that lady starving her chinchilla to death. i read it on the spca website and mom said it was on the news in vancouver which is really great, that it made the news anyways. and that that sorry excuse for a human being got charged. same with the guy who refused to pay for his geriatric horses vet bills so he starved it close to death and when it wouldn't die 'euthanized' it by hanging it to strangle to death on oak bay beach. they published the names of both these people. the horse guy is a family man, bought the horse for his kids originally. i was so incensed reading that story originally i swore to whatever higher power that i was going to hunt him down. i found the addresses of both these people. as it is, i think i might compose letters to both of them. nothing too hateful, because that serves no purpose, but something composed and heartfelt. saying i am glad they got charged, and how causing a creature who is so completely defenseless and innocent pain is probably the most cowardly, despicable thing a person could do. and why did you own animals in the first place etc.

sigh.

and all these canada geese keep coming into wildarc that have been poisoned with something that causes major brain damage. they are probably being targeted by someone who wants them out of their fields. after the fact that have no balance, can hardly walk, have major head tilt and have to be euthanized. the wildarc staff are so lovely, because things are so quiet there at the moment they set up a giant room for the geese (like a whole room, no pen) and let them live out their final week warm and super pampered.

in happy animal new though, i got to release squirrels yesterday. drove back from metchosin to arbutus ridge in caddy bay with them (one of my fave neighborhoods, thought maybe the squirrelies would like it too :) and off they went. hop hop hop into the forest. the male has come in hit by a car and with major malocclusion to boot! so that was totes smiles.

yesterday night i had the most glorious night to myself (not that i'm not always by myself here but you know) and watched zombieland and made cupcakes. omg laura, i take it ALL back about zombieland, that movie was so super great.

what do you guys think about all this rain. you know i actually enjoy it?? its funny because last year every additional grey day caused my s.a.d. to get worse and worse until, well, whatever. this year i love the sound of rain as i wake up or go to sleep and find it so cozy and wintery. shows how far i've come i guess! in something somewhat related i am working with pawliuks resident dr. van du engh for an hour a week and i think it's really helping too.

i've finished my fourth book about the british monarchy (the first was war of roses to present, the second was about the six wives of henry, the third about his kids edward, mary and elizabeth [she is my new feminist hero if i had to have such a thing!] and now i'm moving on to katherine swynford. i seriously can't get enough of this shit, i have no idea why (well actually i do but it's not worth boring you to expound upon :)

- still enjoying being a hermit. been keeping very much to myself and enjoying every moment of it.

- did however go out to the g-head for tyler's birthday (time honoured tradish, how could i not?!) and that was jolly good times. i got him a dollarstore airhorn. an airhorn in the hands of drunken tyler .. you can imagine how overjoyed downtown victoria was, haha. evidence of a night well had:

- went and got sti tested (always a good move) and i am in glowing health. no reason to think otherwise, but even still, your heart does jump getting your results from that nurse!

- my ~rocks~ are finally done! haha :) batch number two not much better that number one .. but one of them is perfect and i finally have to tools to make pendants / keychains / fun

- mom came on a daytrip last sunday with beckham while L and my dad were in seattle at the game. baby's first roadtrip! he was ~such~ a good boy <3

my car lost its mojo

ug. stressy.

as you may know my car petered out in the middle lane of the pat bay as jay and i were madly trying to make the 11pm sailing to shelle's birthday festivus in van on saturday. i hadn't really wanted to drive it after its issues the day before and should have heeded my own sage advice .. we pushed it over to the side of the road, it had overheated again. it eventually turned over and we made the decision to limp it to the terminal (despite its attestations, poor car) and ~just~ made the walk-ons.

upon returning it made a noise very painful to hear and i called a tow (thanks bcaa!) ... we had so badly overheated the engine that the timing belt melted. ouch! plus the reason it overheated was a broken rad. plus some engine manifold had broken due to the stress. oops. the mechanic and owner of the shop, george, is basically the nicest guy ever (you know that auto shop out by the roost with the always-changing lettered sign with funny jokes? that's the one :) he quoted me 850. but assured me that the car itself is super solid otherwise, this was just one of those things, and that with these new bits and pieces i can easily get another 100,000 clicks outta it with little or no problems. i hope so, bro!!!

now i just need to find a ride out to the arc tomorrow morning. er...

k it's too nice to be sitting inside. i'm going to walk downtown and run some errands, then come back and update about the weekend (such a good weekend!)

encounters with the infamous fountain restaurant crack-head
so shaun bowman had been telling me stories about this dude forever, i figured i really had to go in and see this display for myself...

so for 'shaun and kate's day of birthday fun', we started out at the fountain restaurant, to pick up dinner for our picnic... and this guy is just *too much* !!

he's this little chinese man who works at the fountain chinese restaurant, with a big black unruly fro, really bad teeth jutting out all over the place, and when he's not zig zagging around the restaurant cackling to himself he's up front cracking racial slurs to the customers. he only gets away with it because he's so cracked... you just cant take him seriously. most of the time you cant tell a word he's saying, but every once and awhile phrases like 'you must be the dark vampires of hell' and 'go get into your sunfire and drive away white boy' pop out at you... apparantly my short experience is just the beginning, according to shaun. oh and another thing~ the guys name tag changes every single time you go in there... i mistakenly called him 'toni', by what was on his badge... but apparantly he's also sported 'petunia' 'frank' and 'david' on other occasions...

a visit to the fountain is worth it just for the entertainment this guy provides. and the food is pretty damned good, too :P

after that we took the food up to this rock in james bay, along with some hawaiian punch and a doobie and had ourselves a little birthday picnic. then it started to pour all over us. so we just sat there and ate our chow mein and fried rice in the downpour :) and it was sooooo worth getting soaked, because immediately after the rain stopped, this bright, brilliant double rainbow soared across the sky right above us... you could see the whole thing arched all the way across the sky and dissapearing into the ocean... it was one of the most awesome things ive ever witnessed.

anyways. i love that shaun guy :)

the smell of the sea is so *invigorating* .. so fresh, yet so primal.
it's so insane to me, that i live in a harbour town (my apartment is 4 blocks from the ocean) and yet i can count on one hand the times in the past year i've gone down to the ocean with the express purpose of experiencing the sea-shore. so this afternoon, i did. i went to wharf st. and watched the sea planes take-off and land for nearly an hour, just breathing in the scent of the ocean and ruminating on many things.

today in victoria it is georgeously bright and sunny. i left school for my break and wandered around downtown. went into munroe's bookstore... always a numinous place to be.
and now i must return to school but the weekend fast approacheth :D

what a bipolar few days.

lame: while driving through westbank on my way to the reunion, i got a 200 speeding ticket.

awesome: the beauteous bc landscape, rolling down hospital hill into vernon, seeing helen again.

awesome: soaking up a peaceful vernon evening on the porch with helen, sheila and leanne. drinking a few too many beers at sneakers. seeing paul mori 10 years later (always had SUCH a crush on that boy with the stellar smile) and other characters from my past.

lame: some douche-ass kid changing lanes into helens subaru, totally taking out the front left end.

awesome: chillin with the fux family on ok landing, meeting the puppies!

lame, super UBER duper lame: sitting at a stop sign in keremeos, having some woman hit my car from behind at 55 mph with her gimongous truck, pushing me 10 meters into another car on the other side of the intersection. i got pretty banged up and my darling anne boleyn (my car) is now on its way to the junk heap. both ends crumpled completely. the air bag did NOT deploy, which sucked.

awesome?: the guy in front of me (this 62 year old dude named michael from kitimat) was in a rental car which was still driveable (sort of) and he took me and my stuff from keremeos to vancouver. we had pretty good chats, he and i, in the 6 hour drive over.

lame: major sun burnage this weekend. not to mention internal organ damaged and acute whiplash.

awesome?: i'll be seeing alot more of sexy chiropractor in the coming months. and the lady, who was charged (negligence causing vehicular damage over 10.000$?), well, her insurance is going to buy me a new car.

it must have happened within the past 45 minutes, because she's colder but not in rigor.

poor girl.

i think she had a hamster form of hyperthyroidism. and yesterday she was acting strange... she leapt OUT of her cage, like half a foot, onto andrews open hand and just went berserk. she bit him 8 times. when i looked up he was (gently) trying to shake her off while swearing up a storm, and she was hanging off his pinky finger.

she was such a sweet animal (despite the above, which only happened the once) ... she always followed me around in her rolly-ball ... into the bathroom, or would hang around my feet while i did dishes and follow me to the bedroom if i moved to get something.

about halfway through the 'picnic' i realized i was the only one drinking and stopped. it was probs for the better because i hit a wall soon after. too much birthday in too short a time i guess. indicator of old age? anyways i was uber touched that so many of my friends came out :) such a good crew.
